Education (Minors)
Learn teaching fundamentals while earning your BA.
MBU offers education minors with concentrations in English, Science, Math, Special Education, and more. Our versatile minors teach education fundamentals for various grade levels and, when paired with specific majors, can even
lead to licensure. Whether you want to teach at a public, private, or charter school, work as a tutor, or support education non-profits, our minors equip you with the knowledge and skills to turn you dreams into reality.
With acceptance to the Teacher Education Program, select minors prepare you for initial teaching licensure in English, History and Social Science, Math, or Science at the Middle or Secondary levels.

Why minor in Education at Mary Baldwin?
Whether you’re looking to get licensed in a certain subject immediately, work towards provisional licensure in your area of passion, or gain the fundamentals of education and instruction, MBU’s education minors are made for you.
Education Minors with Licensure Tracks
The following minors can lead to teaching licensure. To earn an initial license, students must be accepted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). Upon completion of their minor, corresponding major/co-minor, and TEP requirements, students will be prepared to obtain endorsements by Commonwealth of Virginia standards at the Middle or Secondary levels.
- English Education Minor
- Must major or co-minor in English
- History and Social Science Education Minor
- Must major in History or co-minor in History or Economics
- Math Education Minor
- Must major or co-minor in Math
- Must take ED 238
- Science Education Minor
- Must major in Biology or co-minor in Biology or Chemistry
- Must take ED 230
These minors can also be taken without applying to TEP. They won’t full prepare students for licensure, but they can help students obtain provisional licensure or other educational careers.
Other Education Minors
While these education minors don’t offer tracks to initial licensure at MBU, they are phenomenal programs to introduce you to the world of educational practice while allowing you flexibility to choose any major you desire (other than Elementary Education or Special Education).
- Special Education Minor
- This minor introduces students to Special Education. It’s a great complement to majors in Applied Behavior Analysis or Psychology.
- Standard Education Minor
- While this minor doesn’t provide subject-specific courses needed to obtain licensure, it does provide foundational teaching knowledge and skills for students to seek licensure after further training. Pair it with majors like Studio Art, Exercise Science, or Psychology to work towards provisional licensure in those areas.
